Interview With Ray Gibson, Founder Of StartMonday

1. Ray, where did the inspiration for StartMonday come from?

After 15 years in HR and Recruiting, I was tired of trying to guess who might be a good candidate from a CV or Resume.

This led to the idea of trying to get a first impression of a candidate before booking an interview and the 15-second video was born.

StartMonday was the first company to go down this bold and disruptive path, and since then we have found many ways to make a successful online platform that's a perfect fit for hospitality and retail clients.

2. Tell us a little about your expertise in the hospitality and recruitment arena

I graduated in business studies and personnel management in the UK and then trained as a headhunter in the UK with MRI worldwide. I also spent some time on the other side of the desk an HR leader in Prague, covering Central and Eastern Europe plus DACH.

I always tended to recruit in the technology space and enjoyed talking about breakthrough apps, the dawn or e and m commerce when that took off, and even the first major job boards. I was lucky to get the chance to build my own software, with the help of an amazing team and co-founder, Andrew Evans, from the US.

3. Can you tell us about some of the work you have carried out to date?

We have saved a lot of time and stress in the recruiting process for clients like IHG, Accor, Uber and various hotel groups around Europe, plus some standalone projects for retailers and media businesses.

After the initial 15-second video app was launched, it was clear we could also provide a full Applicant Tracking system to employers who either had no system in place and working from email or were paying too much for large systems full of features they hardly ever used.

4. What's your greatest client success story?

Signing a Europe-wide deal with IHG (Intercontinental Hotel Group) to serve their franchise hotels.

5. What made you consider wanting to work with independent sales agents?

We're interested in broadening our reach with enthusiastic sales people who have a proven track record. It is clear that those who survive on commissions MUST be successful, and this can help us accelerate our growth plan.

If sales are not successful, we will have instant feedback on where the issue is e.g. pricing or story or marketing support rather than waiting for 6-9 months for a fixed salary sales manager to prove his pipeline is not converting at all.

8. What are your plans for the future of StartMonday?

We're expanding our client base in Europe and North America. We also have more product development and features in silent development, plus AI tools designed for the future.
