1. Where did the inspiration for Mimio come from?

Our market has predominantly been ruled by big brands, so we set out to make mobile apps more accessible to everyone. We visited boutiques and startups across London and found that they all wanted additional distribution channels but lacked the combination of time, capital, and resources it took to get them done. That’s why we set about creating a platform for personalized mobile apps for Apple and Android that were 90% cheaper and faster than market averages. Our tagline reflects our core belief: everyone deserves one.

2. Tell us a little about your expertise in the tech industry.

Our co-founders Milan and Jai are two young and successful tech entrepreneurs with experience turning companies with budgets of only a couple hundred pounds profitable within a matter of weeks. Jai is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the University College of London. Milan has worked with one of the biggest digital tech and app innovation powerhouses in the UK. Together, they’ve given multiple talks to the next generation of tech entrepreneurs and were recognized by PwC at their Next Generation Future Leaders in Technology event.

4. What made you choose mobile apps?

Here are a few market statistics:

Users download on average 8.8 apps per month, with app installs up 5% year over year (YoY). (Intelligence, 2015)

Users spend 90% of their time in apps compared to the mobile Web. (Khalaf, 2015)

66% of companies that saw a decrease in customer loyalty over the past year do not have a mobile app - ( Andrew Gazdecki, 2016) In fact, a quarter of millennials like to shop using a retail app, by far the highest result of any other age group (23% of 18-24-year-olds and 26% of 25-34-year-olds).

Mobile commerce sales are expected to rise to $32 billion next year, which will not only mark a massive increase from the $10 billion that was generated in 2012, but also account for over 7% of all eCommerce sales. (Traxler, 2013)

App users browse almost four times more products than mobile web users and are almost two times more likely to add items to their basket in an app than in a mobile browser. (Chaffey, 2017)

5. What made you consider working with independent sales agents?

As a bootstrapping startup, much of our work is done offshore. That means a significant portion of our time is spent on the go. With our background in sales, we know that independent sales agents are self-motivated, reliable, and results-orientated people. We wanted to work with like-minded individuals that require minimal oversight, yet can sell a product that offers them and their clients an impeccable value. We made our initial offer on CommissionCrowd very lucrative so that we could find agents we can establish long-term and successful relationships with.

6. Why would agents have an edge selling your products?

Mobile commerce sales are expected to rise to $32bn, up from $10bn in 2012, and will account for over 7% of all e-Commerce sales. App users browse four times more products and are twice as likely to add items to their baskets as compared to on a mobile browser. Our technology offers clients new distribution channels that allow them to rival big competitors, all at a cost and timescale faster and cheaper than any other company on the market.

7. What sets your service apart from the competition?

Mimio’s mobile app development team has created over 50 apps for the marketplace. We set out to make mobile apps accessible to every e-commerce store. What we found were three major restrictions that stopped companies from being competitive: money, time, and resources.


The first barrier was the large cost associated with creating an app. According to Google (Savvy Apps):

"Apps built by the largest app companies, the "big boys", likely cost anywhere between $500,000 to $1,000,000. Apps built by agencies like Savvy Apps cost anywhere between $150,000 to $450,000. Apps built by smaller shops, possibly with only 2-3 people, likely cost anywhere between $50,000 to $100,000."

Our technology enables us to license mobile app platforms to e-commerce stores at a fraction of this price, saving small and medium-sized companies over 90% of the market average cost. This ensures that these companies can compete in a marketplace heavily dominated by companies with big budgets and resources.


Another big constraint for companies was the time investment involved in creating an app. According to Savvy Apps:

8. What are your plans for the future of Mimio?

We couldn’t be more excited for the future of Mimio. As we add more and more clients, they can expect new and exciting features for their apps. Apps will grow in scale with added functionality, offering clients more value. Through extensive feedback, research, development, and innovation we plan to stay on top of current market trends and figure out better and more streamlined ways of boosting sales through a tightened sales funnel. Collectively, this will mean a better interface, with added features that result in increased customer loyalty and sales revenue.

9. Please describe your typical sales cycle and process.

Our sales cycle is a very simple, clear-cut process that can be broken down into a few simple steps. It all starts with getting in touch! We love meeting new sales agents and answering any questions they have. Prior to selling an app, we work with agents to ensure they completely understand our processes and the training it takes to work with our clients. Giving our agents the space and freedom it takes to spread their wings and do what they do best, we await the good news. The moment a contract is signed and there is a confirmed sale, we have a starter pack ready for clients to get up and running. Using our client’s info, we create a customized app within two weeks. Upon confirmation of completion from the client, our agents receive a commission payment totaling 40% off the sale.

10. How do you currently bring in new business and win contracts?

We currently bring in sales by approaching startups or premium boutiques in central London who are selling products exclusively through websites or retail outlets. Generally, these are companies with high-end products who are very open to new distribution channels. We speak to them face-to-face about what we’re offering and how it can benefit their company. Once we come to an agreement, we then work together to understand their branding needs and create a concept app. Using our easy to use starter pack, we work closely with clients to deliver on their specifications and prepare their apps for launch. At the moment our sales are all done face to face and sometimes through an initial approach over email.
